Popeyes Singapore has suspended its limited-edition Poppy Fish Burger across all outlets after a customer discovered mold on her bun at the Orchard Xchange branch, prompting a full investigation.
The chain said the move was a precaution while investigations continue, adding that it “sincerely apologizes for the incident.”
In a statement on Nov. 20, Popeyes said “food safety is our highest priority and we take this matter seriously,” Mothership reported.
According to the chain, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has already inspected the outlet and found its food-safety controls to be in order. Popeyes is now working with SFA, suppliers and its operations team to pinpoint the cause and prevent future lapses.
The customer, Teng, told Mothership that she had eaten most of the Poppy Fish Burger before noticing a moldy patch on the bun. She said she did not spot it earlier because she was looking at her computer while eating. She discarded the rest of the burger and filed complaints with both Popeyes and SFA.
SFA confirmed it had inspected the outlet and “sternly warned” the management to strengthen their procedures. The agency said it would keep monitoring the outlet for compliance.
Popeyes said it would review its internal processes to understand how the lapse happened. It has since conducted a full inspection of all food items, asked suppliers to verify shelf-life integrity, and reinforced food-safety checks at all locations. The chain added that it has received recommendations from SFA, which it will implement “immediately”.
